Introduction

Hi, I’m Hiroshi Tanaka, and in this lesson, I’ll share my best IELTS Reading Time Management Tips.

As an examiner and trainer, I’ve seen many candidates lose marks not because they lacked skill, but because they ran out of time. With only 60 minutes and 40 questions, you must balance speed and accuracy. Let’s learn how to manage every minute effectively.

The 60-Minute Structure

The IELTS Reading test — both Academic and General Training — has:

  • 3 sections (or passages)
  • 40 questions total
  • 1 continuous hour (no breaks)

Unlike the Listening test, no extra transfer time is given.
You must read, answer, and check within the same 60 minutes.

🎯 Target: Finish Sections 1 and 2 quickly to leave enough time for the more complex final passage.

Why Most Candidates Struggle with Time

  • Reading every word instead of scanning.
  • Spending too long on difficult questions.
  • Ignoring passage structure.
  • Not practising under real-time conditions.

Time management is not only about speed — it’s about decision-making.

Section-by-Section Timing Strategy

Section 1 – Warm-Up (15–18 mins)

  • Text type: simple notices, advertisements, or factual info (GT) / short texts (Academic).
  • Skim headings and subheadings first.
  • Aim for quick accuracy; don’t double-check easy answers.

Section 2 – Moderate Challenge (18–20 mins)

  • Text type: workplace documents or semi-academic articles.
  • Scan for key details (names, dates, processes).
  • If one question is unclear, move on immediately — return later if time remains.

Section 3 – Deep Focus (22–25 mins)

  • Text type: long, complex argument or research-based passage.
  • Skim introduction and conclusion carefully to grasp author’s viewpoint.
  • Allocate final 2–3 minutes for review.

The 10-Minute Rule

⏱️ Always keep the last 8–10 minutes for:

  • Transferring answers (paper-based)
  • Final checks (computer-based)
  • Correcting spelling and numbering errors

Even one corrected mistake can raise your overall band score.

Smart Skipping Technique

Situation

Action

Stuck on one question

Skip after 30 seconds

Two options seem right

Mark and move on

Unsure of vocabulary

Guess based on logic and context

Time running out

Focus on easy marks first

IELTS doesn’t penalise wrong answers — so never leave blanks.

Real-Time Practice Strategy

  • Use a timer during every mock test.
  • Practise reading on both paper and screen.
  • Record your completion time for each passage.
  • Gradually reduce reading time by 1 minute per week until you reach target pace.

💡 Many high-band students build speed through daily timed reading, not by rushing — but by improving focus and familiarity.

Managing Focus During the Test

  • Keep calm during the first few minutes; don’t panic if the text looks long.
  • If your mind drifts, take one deep breath and re-engage.
  • Mentally divide each passage into 3 parts — introduction, body, conclusion — to track progress.

Consistency is key: a steady pace outperforms last-minute speed.

Common Mistakes & Fixes

Mistake

Why It Happens

Solution

Spending too long on one question

Fear of missing it

Move on and return later

Not checking clock

Over-focus on text

Glance at timer every 5 mins

Reading everything

Lack of scanning skills

Skim first, scan second

Ignoring question order

Losing flow

Follow question sequence to save time

Practice Example (Timed Reading Task)

Task:
You have 3 short texts about workplace safety.
Try to answer 12 questions in 15 minutes.

✅ Review:
If you finish with 2 minutes remaining, your speed is on target.
If not, note where you lost time — vocabulary confusion? locating information? rereading too much?

Examiner Insights

From my experience, Band 8–9 readers manage time through structure, not stress.
They divide the test naturally: 20 minutes per passage, then refine based on difficulty.
They also know when to stop — they don’t chase one mark at the cost of five others.
