Train Your Listening Transfer and Time Management

Don’t lose marks after hearing the right answer — train your timing, accuracy, and transfer routine.

Many IELTS candidates lose valuable marks after the audio ends — not because they didn’t understand the speaker, but because they made careless transfer errors.

It’s more common than you think.

“I had 35 correct in my mock tests. How did I end up with Band 6.5?”
Answer: Spelling errors. Word limit issues. Skipped answers. Sloppy transfer.

Let’s fix that — for both paper-based and computer-based tests.

IELTS Listening Timing Breakdown

Stage Time What Happens
Listening 30 mins Audio played once. Answer as you listen.
Transfer 10 mins (paper only) Copy answers onto the official answer sheet.
Review Real-time (CBT only) No extra time. Accuracy must happen as you go.

Paper-Based Test: The Transfer Stage

What You Get:

  • Question booklet → For notes and rough answers
  • Answer sheet → For clean, final answers

What You Must Do:

✅ Check spelling (especially Part 1 and 2)
✅ Write only the answer (not the full sentence)
✅ Watch word limits — “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER”
✅ Use correct grammar — singular/plural, articles, prepositions
✅ Don’t change your mind last second without checking context

Computer-Based Test: Real-Time Accuracy

  • You type directly into the answer boxes
  • No separate transfer time — what you type is your final answer
  • You get 2 minutes at the end to check your answers

Why It’s Risky:

  • It’s easier to skip a box accidentally
  • You might miss a correction if you’re multitasking
  • Mistyped words = lost marks — even if your listening was perfect

Solution:

🔁 Train to type as you listen.
📉 Use our computer-mode mock tests with instant feedback.
🧠 Build muscle memory — not just listening skills.

🚨 5 Common Transfer Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Spelling errors — “enviroment” instead of “environment”
  2. Wrong word count — writing “the final project” when limit says “ONE WORD ONLY”
  3. Capitalisation issues — names or places must start with a capital letter
  4. Grammar mismatch — writing “books” when the sentence requires singular
  5. Misaligned answers — putting the answer to Q23 in Q24’s box

“In Listening, the audio gives you the answer — the band score is lost or won during the transfer.”
