Why Question Understanding Affects Your Band Score

One of the most common reasons students lose marks on the IELTS Reading test isn’t because they don’t know the answer — it’s because they misunderstood the question.

After teaching IELTS for over 10 years, I’ve seen it again and again: learners reading too fast, skipping over important words, or focusing on one word instead of understanding the whole idea.

This page will teach you how to understand IELTS Reading questions faster and more accurately — so you know what you’re looking for and how to find it in the passage.

Step-by-Step Strategy: Understanding Questions Fast

Step 1: Read the Full Question Slowly (Once)

Don’t skim the question. Read it carefully the first time. Focus especially on:

  • What is the question type? (e.g. short answer, multiple choice, T/F/NG)
  • What exactly is it asking?

Step 2: Identify the Keywords

Underline 2–3 words that:

  • Carry the meaning (nouns, verbs, key adjectives)
  • Will help you scan the passage

Example: Question: What is the main reason farmers preferred the new irrigation system? ✅ Keywords: main reason, farmers, preferred, irrigation system

Step 3: Predict the Type of Answer Needed

Is it a:

  • Reason?
  • Date?
  • Name?
  • Definition?
  • Location in the text?

This helps you focus your scanning later.

Step 4: Think About Paraphrasing

What words might be used in the text instead of the keywords?

  • “Preferred” = liked, chose, selected, found more useful
  • “Reason” = benefit, advantage, because, due to

Now your brain is ready to find it faster.

Realistic Cambridge-Style Example

Passage:

“The earliest techniques to measure ocean depth were found to be unreliable in deep water because they often gave incorrect results due to water pressure.”

Question:

Why did scientists stop using the initial method of measuring ocean depth?

Answer: Because they gave incorrect results in deep water

Bad approach:

  • Looking for “initial method” or “measuring ocean” word-for-word.

Better approach:

  • Think about meaning: “Why did they stop it?” = a problem or disadvantage
  • Think synonyms: “initial method” might be written as “early technique” or “first system”

Practice Tip: Pause Before You Read

Train yourself to spend 5–10 seconds just looking at the question. Don’t panic. Ask:

  • What is this asking?
  • What would a correct answer look like?

That short pause helps your brain get organized.
