Introduction

Hi, I’m Sarah Thompson, IELTS Writing tutor and examiner.
If you want to achieve a Band 8 or 9 in IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, you need to see what excellence looks like.
Reading and analysing Band 9 Model Letters is the most effective way to understand tone, vocabulary, structure, and flow.

In this lesson, I’ll share five authentic Band 9 samples — one for each major letter type — with examiner-style commentary so you can learn exactly why they achieve top marks.

What Makes a Band 9 Letter

A Band 9 letter demonstrates:
Full Task Achievement – covers all bullet points clearly and logically.
Appropriate Tone – consistent formality throughout.
Wide Lexical Range – precise, topic-related vocabulary.
Complex Grammar Control – natural, error-free sentences.
Cohesive Flow – smooth linking and paragraphing.

1️⃣ Band 9 Formal Letter — Complaint

Question:
You recently stayed at a hotel and were not satisfied with the service. Write a letter to the manager.

  • Explain why you were not satisfied.
  • Describe the problems you faced.
  • Say what you would like the manager to do.

Model Answer:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service I received during my recent stay at your hotel from 5th to 8th October.

Firstly, the air-conditioning unit in my room was not functioning, and despite notifying reception twice, no action was taken. Secondly, the breakfast service was poorly managed — I waited over twenty minutes for a simple meal.

I would appreciate it if you could refund one night’s charge or offer a discount voucher for a future stay. I hope you will address these issues promptly to maintain your hotel’s reputation.

Yours faithfully,
Sarah Thompson

Examiner’s Comment:

  • Task fully addressed; all three points covered clearly.
  • Tone polite yet firm — perfect for a complaint.
  • Grammar and vocabulary fully controlled (notify reception, discount voucher, maintain reputation).

  • Describe the problem.
  • Explain how it affects members.
  • Suggest improvements.

Model Answer:

Dear Mr Carter,

I am writing to express concern about the deteriorating condition of the changing rooms at our sports club. The showers often leak, and the lockers are broken, making it inconvenient for members to store belongings safely.

This has led to several complaints, and some members have even cancelled their subscriptions. I believe renovating the facilities and introducing a maintenance schedule would significantly improve satisfaction.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,
Sarah Thompson

Examiner’s Comment:

  • Clear explanation of the issue and constructive suggestions.
  • Excellent tone — serious yet respectful.
  • Cohesive flow using linking phrases (This has led to…, I believe…).
